Workshop with new arrivals from Iran and Afghanistan
9 Dec 2016

The poet Rumi was a traveller and much of his work is about place and human connection. Very relevant for people who have just arrived in a new country, building a  new life for themselves and their families.

Earlier this month, Fearless Theatre facilitated a workshop with the Australian Migrant Resource Centre (AMRC) as part of a new project together with the Middle Eastern Communities Council of South Australia (MECCSA). The project, entitled "Rumi: In Their Own Voices", involves people of all ages and talents from the Middle Eastern community to bring their own stories, music and favourite Rumi poems to life.

Fearless Theatre’s Renato Musolino conducted the workshop involving people recently arrived in Australia from Iran and Afghanistan. They explored some of Rumi’s poems, discussing language and character, as well as techniques around storytelling and dramatic structure. The workshop was also aimed at building confidence and increasing a sense of connection to their new home.

After the workshop one of the participants was moved enough to send a thank you to Renato saying “It is a great honour to meet such a kind person like you. I hope to see you again and work more with you.”

Fearless Theatre hopes to offer more workshops for people newly arrived in Australia in the coming year.
