Fearless Theatre speaks out on diversity
14 Dec 2016
When we hold up a mirror to our performing arts, why don't we see the faces of Australia looking back at us? And where are the myriad accents that make up our rich multicultural community?
Fearless Theatre Artistic Director, Renato Musolino recently published an article in the December 2016 edition of Equity Magazine, a national publication of the Media and Entertainment Arts Alliance.
Renato challenges the Australian performing arts community to “look in our own backyard” at the lack of diversity on our stages and screens. He recounts his own personal journey in London, seeing the great Adrian Lester, who is no stranger to breaking down stereotypes, deliver a blistering performance only later to hear him lament at the underrepresentation of people from ethnic minorities in British theatre.
Renato makes the case for Fearless Theatre as an important bridge between multicultural communities and the mainstream arts sector, not only to support the diversification of a predominantly “white” industry, but to provide much needed creative outlets, education and employment opportunities for highly marginalised people.
